What does an IDC involve?

The parts

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) has two parts – the Assistant Instructor (AI) and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Generally, most divers complete both programs and then attend an Instructor Exam. If you have a professional rating with another agency, it may be possible for you to enroll onto the required part of the PADI Instructor Development Course.

What does the course include?

The IDC lasts around 10 -12 days and consists of water and classroom sessions focused on teaching you how to conduct all PADI core courses from DSD and BubbleMaker to Divemasters. By this point in your diving career, you will already have graduated to PADI Divemaster where you honed your dive skills, got a stronger understanding of the theory of diving and know the responsibilities that a dive professional has to perform. As well as workshops based on how to teach at different certification levels both in confined and open water, the IDC classroom sessions will focus on five topics:

  • PADI Standards and Procedures for courses you can teach (with in water workshops)

  • Learning, Instruction and the PADI System

  • Risk Management and Diver Safety

  • The Business of Diving and your role as an instructor

  • Marketing Diving and Sales Counseling
